Come to EXPANDING HORIZONS, A Workshop for Small Businesses Entering International Markets

Learn how hundreds of American small businesses have used Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) finance and insurance products to gain access to emerging markets overseas. Discover how you can take advantage of all the products OPIC has to offer to expand internationally while supporting growth at home. Participants will also hear from other U.S. government agencies that offer programs complementary to OPIC, including market research, international partner search, trade financing and feasibility study funding.

OPIC, the U.S. government’s development finance institution, offers a variety of financial tools including direct loans and political risk insurance, to help businesses invest in new and emerging markets. Since 1971, OPIC has supported nearly $200 billion of investment in thousands of projects in more than 150 countries around the world, generating $74 billion in U.S. exports, and creating jobs in local economies overseas as well as in the U.S.

Small businesses in the New York region will have an opportunity to learn how to gain access to lucrative emerging markets overseas with the support of the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), when OPIC hosts a workshop in New York City on June 27.

Since its establishment in 1971, OPIC has committed $27.8 billion in financing and political risk insurance to projects sponsored by companies in the greater New York region – New York, New Jersey and Connecticut – supporting more than 109,000 jobs and $23.6 billion in U.S. exports (data current as of September 30, 2011).

The Expanding Horizons workshop will outline for participants the innovative financial tools that OPIC has used for 40 years to help U.S. businesses successfully invest in emerging markets. Special emphasis will be placed on opportunities in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors, an OPIC priority.

Speakers will include senior government officials from OPIC, as well as from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the U.S. Department of Commerce, including the U.S. Commercial Service and the Minority Business Development Agency.

The OPIC workshop will be held Wednesday, June 27, at the Hilton New York at 1335 Avenue of the Americas. Companies interested in attending may register online at www.rgameetings.com/opic.

The event is the latest in a highly successful series that has educated more than 1600 small and medium-sized business owners across the United States about OPIC products and services. Since 2006, OPIC has held Expanding Horizons events in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, Houston, San Francisco, Boston, St. Louis, Denver, Philadelphia, Orange (CA), Raleigh and New Orleans.

For small businesses, adapting to tough times often means expanding their horizons—OPIC workshops in New York can help

Ricardo Tejada, Founder and Managing Director of the Vnesto Capital, delivered the keynote address at the Expanding Horizons seminar in Orange County, CA, where he shared his story of adapting to the recession by expanding his business into South Korea and Ecuador. Vnesto Capital was founded in Los Angeles in 2005 to help small firms obtain capital and build successful business plans, but has since expanded into a full service investment bank.

Here, Tejada discusses why expanding overseas is the right strategy for many small businesses.

Did you always think of growing your business overseas, or was it a gradual evolution?

I think with any concept, you start at its core and say these are the small services and this is the immediate need that I see. And from there, it really just mushroomed into seeing that there were more opportunities and that the need was greater than I expected.

Vnesto is a services business, which is not what most people think of when they think of exports. What is the international opportunity for services businesses?

We are used to thinking of exports as things we can package and ship. But we can also package and export our expertise, whether it is marketing or advisory or financial. A lot of people believe that services are the future of exports. It requires a shift in thinking of what an export is.

What is the biggest challenge of expanding internationally?

Starting a business is always a difficult task. When you think about expanding overseas and understanding all of the licensing and tax and employee and marketplace issues associated with that, the challenge is almost doubled. You have to be prepared for a big learning curve

How essential is overseas expansion for small businesses?

Obviously if you are a liquor store at the corner of your local neighborhood, or some very small mom and pop operation, it is probably not going to serve a purpose. But for many businesses, expanding overseas can offer a huge advantage. It is necessary for all small businesses to start looking at the world as a smaller place. Many developing countries are not oversaturated and have more room for growth. If you are able to export your unique competitive advantage, it is almost a no-brainer.

How can companies benefit from working with OPIC?

When a business starts expanding overseas it has several concerns about security and having the capacity to make wise decisions, and finding the capital to fund the expansion. OPIC comes in and really fulfills those concerns. So, when it speaks to partners overseas they realize that they are not just dealing with a small business, but with a small business in partnership with the U.S. government.
